Cuba invested about 150 million dollars for the development of cellular phones since 2003 and plans to exceed the first million lines at the end of this year, reported official sources today.

The Vicepresident of Mobile Services of the Cuban Telecommunications Enterprise (ETECSA), Maximo Lafuente, affirmed in a press conference that the island carries out an investment process to guarantee the expansion of that network.

The will of the organization to gradually reduce the service tariffs will allow the increase in traffic with the same amount of money, 11.88 dollars as monthly average, said the official.

This year ETECSA will make the investments necessary to conclude 2010 with one million customers, expressed Lafuente in statements to Prensa Latina.

We cannot afford to create infrastructure which we are not going to use, indicated the official after explaining the investments made year by year should secure what has been projected.

During the press conference, the official advanced that until 2015, the enterprise projects 2.4 million customers of cellular technology.

Regarding the roaming service, the second source of income in mobile technology, Lafuente said this year should be signed another 30 accords to exceed the over 300 accords currently with operators of 128 countries.

He also announced reductions in national and international tariffs, which in this last case implies reductions from 42 to 75 percent.

In the case of the calls service from cellular phones in the national territory will be established from June 1st the differentiated prices according to the hour, with an important reduction at night.

The modalities of reverted calls for the modality of advanced payment (over 95 percent of the contracted lines).

The official said the cellular services have had a notable reduction of the activation costs of 111 convertible pesos (119.88 dollars) to 40 CUC (43.20). Until the moment, 23 of the 169 municipalities of the country do not have mobile coverage, specially in mountainous and swampy zones of difficult access.
