KUALA LUMPUR, The Cuban government has offered four places this year for Malaysians to pursue medical studies in the Caribbean island nation, said Cuba's ambassador to Malaysia Carlos A. Amores.

Amores said applications had been received from 10 students which were now being processed, and the results would be announced soon.

Succesful candidates will commence their studies in Cuba in September this year.

"This, in a way, is to repay the solidarity showed by many countries like Malaysia towards Cuba for so many years," he told Bernama after launching an art exhibition featuring the works of 15 renowned Cuban artists, themed "Reflexions of Cuba", jointly organised by the Cuban embassy and City Art Gallery Sdn Bhd, here, Thursday.

Amores said the places offered this year were than less last year because of the global financial crisis which had affected almost all the nations in the world.

Cuba first offered medical studies to Malaysian students in 2003, but it was only in 2007 that the first intake took place as not many Malaysians were aware of the offer.

Amores said in 2007, six Malaysian students were given places, five in 2008 and 10 last year. The medical studies are conducted in the Spanish language.

"They (Malaysian medical students in Cuba) are all very happy...we are not only educating doctors, but doctors with commitment to healthcare and to the patients," he said, adding that currently there were also one Malaysian student taking a Spanish language course in Cuba.

Amores said Cuba's medical studies were well known globally for their quality and were fully funded by the Cuban government, including for Malaysian students, except for the air tickets.

Currently, there are more than 40,000 foreign students from more than 100 countries pursuing medicine and sports-related studies in Cuba.

Since 1959, Cuban doctors had served in more than 100 countries such as in Asia and Africa. Currently, there are more than 20,000 Cuban doctors and other medical personnel serving in Venezuela, 300 doctors in Timor Leste and about 800 in earthquake-hit Haiti.

In his speech, Amores said the art exhibitin was an excellent opportunity for the Malaysian public to know about Cuban culture, its land and people better.

The exhibition is held at the City Art Gallery, The AmpWalk, Jalan Ampang from April 22 to May 2. The gallery hours are from Monday to Sunday, 11.30am to 6.30pm.

Prices of the Cuban paintings range from RM4,500 to RM22,000 each. Several pieces were sold today.

Among the Cuban artists are William Hernandez, Enrique Baster Hijuelo, Barbaro M. Reyes, Orestes Gaulhiac and brothers, Kelvin and Kadir Lopez.
