HAVANA, Cuba, The Ninth Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) that started on Monday in Venezuela will target economic and social projects rather than political issues, announced ALBA’s Political Commission.

According to the Bolivarian News Agency, ALBA member nations will also size up the advance in trade activities using the virtual regional currency of Sucre, the implementation of regional social programs and celebrations for the bicentennial of the beginning of independence wars in Latin America.

ALBA Permanent Coordinator Francisco Arias Cardenas said the meeting will follow up on agreements made during the Havana ALBA Summit rather than discuss political issues, for which the Political Council will be summoned within two months.

He said the summit is also special because it marks the 200 anniversary of the beginning of Venezuela’s independence war.

ALBA’s Political Commission is made up of the foreign minister of each member country. In a meeting that started Sunday in Caracas’ Yellow House, the commission assessed steps taken towards the creation of the ALBA Bank, among other aspects.
