Almost a month ago, when Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh hurt his nose during the final of the Commonwealth Boxing Championship against Frank Buglioni of England, many were surprised by the decision of the 24-year-old to continue the bout.

Vijender was playing his first final at home since 2003 and after the 13-3 win, he said he had felt it was important for him to win a medal in India. However, the injury means that as the Indian team leave for Cuba on Sunday for a 20-day training-competition tour, Vijender will be not be on the flight.

“The nose has not healed properly. Even though I am taking part in sparring sessions at NIS, Patiala, there is some swelling in the upper part and I do not want to take further risk.

Cuba offers a chance to train with world-class boxers and I am quite disappointed to miss out on the tour,” said Vijender,

who was also out of action after the world championships in Milan last year due to a recurring wrist injury.

The Bhiwani boxer was also invited by the AIBA to take part in the Presidents’ Cup last December, but had to miss out due to the same wrist injury. He made a comeback by winning a silver medal in the Champions of Champions event in China in February this year.
