Cuban educational authorities today announced that admission to university will be in accordance with the needs of the economy, and they anticipated a decline from previous years for the course 2010-2011.

The offers are less than those of previous years and 100 thousand places are expected for all types of careers (excluding distance education mode), said the director of Admission and Labor Allocation of Higher Education Ministry, Rene Sanchez.

Agronomy, technical careers, basic sciences, and teaching represent over 60 percent of those offered, while humanities tend to decline.

The director recalled that new for next academic year is that candidates must obtain at least 60 over 100 points in admission tests of Mathematics, Spanish language and History of Cuba in order to access higher education.

Passing grades for the three subjects are essential for careers with special requirements such as Art, Design, Architecture, Computer Science, Medical Sciences, Journalism, Physical Education and International Affairs.

In principle, students entering higher education are guaranteed a job in accordance with the profession they studied, he said.

Next course only Russian Language and Literature will not be offered due to lack of conditions, but it will open for course 2011-2012.

With almost a million university graduates in 50 years, Cuba also offers several specialties in distance education mode, but this year students have to pass admission exams.
