Public health personnel from eastern Santiago de Cuba are carrying out daily investigations in the city’s communities, in order to detect and monitor people with non-specific fever and other symptoms that could be a sign of dengue.

People are aware of the serious consequences a dengue epidemic could bring.

Regrettably, however, there are people that are feverish and have other symptoms who refuse to be seen by specialists at health facilities, as well as others who don’t go to hospitals to receive adequate medical treatment.

Ana Rosalia Castellanos, a student in the third year of her medical studies, told ACN that every morning she visits houses and workplaces assigned to her in her area, in order to find out whether there are persons with fever, headache, or other symptoms of the disease.

She said that in spite of knowing the serious consequences a dengue epidemic could bring, part of the population still maintains an irresponsible attitude, by not accepting medical visits and in some cases by hiding their symptoms.

Along with her classmates, Castellanos is devoting part of her time to support the battle the country is waging in favor of the health of Cuban families, leaving aside for the moment spare time and entertainment and devoting long hours to prevention.

The effort of maintaining health and preserve the health of all should be a shared task, in which honesty and awareness of the difficult moment we all live under the constant threat of diseases prevail -diseases that could be deadly if not adequately treated.

Eric Martinez, a professor with Havana’s Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute said recently in this city that the most important thing to put an end to the danger of getting sick and make other people sick is the cooperation of the population, and that all persons with signs of dengue should become aware of the need of accepting admission in a hospital and follow medical instructions.

The hospital network in the territory is well prepared and adopts adequate measures to receive patients who could be suffering from dengue, with the necessary amount of beds and staff to treat them.
