Cuba started Thursday a two-phase vaccination campaign against the A/H1N1 flu virus, said the Health Ministry.

The drive is expected to benefit more than 1.1 million people selected for their vulnerability.

About 80,000 pregnant women and children will be the first group of receivers of the vaccine when the first stage completes on April 20, according to an official note from the ministry.

The second phase will run on May 3-15.

The ministry said the medical staff, who will participate in the campaign, has been duly trained on the specifications of the vaccine, the dose and the adverse effects watch system.

This vaccination campaign is expected to protect the high-risk groups in the nation.

Cuba has reported 54 deaths from A/H1N1 flu, the largest number in the Caribbean region, according to latest figures from the World Health Organization.
