With the World Indoor Track and Field Championships around the corner, scheduled to place March 12 to 14 in Qatar, JREB looks at some of Cuba’s medal potentials.

Wilfredo Martinez added his name to the list of hopefuls after recording the second longest high jump of the European winter season. Martinez jumped 8.18 meters during a meet in Madrid placing him just behind Brian Johnson from the United States who last week recorded the season’s best jump of 8.19m.

Martinez’ most recent jump of 8.03m on February 13 in Madrid should ensure him a good chance of getting to the podium at the World Indoor Championships.

Other medallist hopefuls for Cuba are triple jumpers Yoandris Betanzos and Arnie David Giralt, and Leonel Suárez in the heptathlon. Suarez has been on fire recently, setting a new national record last week of 5,964 points.

Cuba’s next meet leading up to the World Championships will be the Spanish National Championships to take place this weekend.
