Everything is ready for the official inauguration on February 11 of one the country’s most popular cultural events, the 19th Havana International Book Fair, to be held at the Morro-Cabaña Complex.

The presence of 40 countries at this Fair has been confirmed, in which some 100 foreign and some 50 Cuban exhibitors will participate. Also the cultural exchange between Cuba and Russia will mark a new chapter in the history of cooperation.

The Russian delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, will include more than 150 personalities from the world of books: poets, directors of the most important publishing houses, journalists, translators, graphic artists, and writers, among them poet Yevgueny Yevtushenko, Olesia Nikolaeva and Sergey Lukyanenko, and many other well-known intellectuals.

The Russian pavilion, with an area of 435 square meters, will have 3,500 titles on display, exhibited by some 300 publishing houses. Standing out will be a special exhibition dedicated to the author of The Cherry Orchard, to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anton Chekhov; another one on Mikhail Sholokhov; on his 105th anniversary, and a third one on Leo Tolstoy.

The event will be honored by the presence of figures of international prestige, like South African Nadine Gordimer, the winner of the 1991 Nobel Literature Prize; Canadian writer Margaret Eleanor Atwood; Brazilian Frei Betto, who has been given the Letters Prize by ALBA (the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas); and Belgian Francois Houtart.

Another exhibition of indisputable impact will be that of Russian cinema, which will have two main venues: the Infanta movie theater, for classic films, and La Rampa movie theater, for contemporary ones.
