Cuba has more than 210 research centers and technological and innovation areas to develop products, replacing and creating new exportable items.

The scientific labor force finished 2009 with more than 71,000 workers and 64 percent of them were university graduates, according to the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment.

Women represent 54 percent of the scientific sector in Cuba and there are around 9,000 Doctors of Science, said Granma newspaper.

More than 60 Cuban universities around the country have 80 institutions entirely devoted to research and generation and transference of advanced technology.
