The Cuban medical personnel in Haiti has taken care of 676 wounded people after the earthquake that rocked that Caribbean nation on Tuesday afternoon, Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez confirmed.

During a meeting with his Surinamese peer Lygia Louise Irene Kraag-Keteldijk, Rodriguez asserted that his ministry has worked strenuously since Tuesday afternoon coordinating the responses by Cuban institutions in the face of the disaster in Haiti.

"There are over 400 Cuban collaborators in Haiti, 403 exactly, and 344 of them are working in the health sector, because they are doctors or paramedics," said the FM.

"We have been able to know about the situation of those who live in Port au Prince.”Two of them are seriously injured and the rest is in good condition," he added.

He said that although there was a communication breakdown, they have been able to keep in touch with the Cuban Embassy and other officials that work in Port au Prince. Cuban officials in Haiti worked throughout the night visiting different places in the city.

"Our medical staff has turned their own accommodation facilities into two makeshift hospitals to take care of the sick and wounded", the FM pointed out.

Rodriguez reiterated Cuba's willingness to participate in any Caribbean Community (CARICOM) effort in this respect, to work together to assist the Haitian people.

A seven-degree earthquake devastated Haiti on Tuesday and experts estimated that it caused a large number of fatal victims that could amount to thousands.

The quake with an epicentre 9 miles away from Port au Prince caused serious damage to the city where at least 100 buildings collapsed, including the Presidential Palace and the United Nations headquarters.
