Cuba has 1.1 scientific researchers per each 1,000 inhabitants, said Liliam Alvarez Diaz, one of the three Cuban women members of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, headquartered in Trieste, Italy.

"This is one of the highest indexes in Latin America, and it is due to the Revolution's policy of opening the doors of teaching for everyone," the expert from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment told the National News Agency.

More than 100,000 professionals are taken postgraduate studies, included master's degrees, specialties, and PhD courses, Alvarez Diaz stated.

The country has an infrastructure of 217 centres and research, technologic and innovation areas, where the Gross Domestic Product has risen by six percent those disciplines.

About 72,000 workers are working in activities of this sector; most of them have been graduated in Cuban universities.
