Rene Gonzalez, one of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998, sent a message of gratitude to three Argentinean youths that began climbing the Aconcagua Mountain on December 25th.

In the letter, Rene highlights the demand made by Santiago Vega, Aldo Bonavitta and Alcides Bonavitta for the release of the Cuban Five – as Rene, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino are internationally known –
saying that this gesture honours him and his four comrades, the Cubadebate website reports.

The mountaineers are carrying with them a flag with the logo of the Five – created by Gerardo -, which they will leave in the top of the Aconcagua – 6,959 meters over the sea level and regarded as the ‘Roof of the Americas’.

The Cuban Five were arrested and given harsh sentences for monitoring anti-Cuba extremist groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against the Caribbean nation.
