Cuban female triple jump athlete Yargelis Savigne went to the threshold of victory at the sports poll conducted by Cuban news Agency Prensa Latina to select the best athletes of 2009 in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Savigne added the votes coming from Cuban newspapers Trabajadores and Orbe, digital website Cubadebate and magazine Negocios en Cuba to get 28 votes, 16 over Jamaican sprinter Shelly Ann-Fraser.

Savigne has dominated the classification since the very beginning and everything is leading to the idea that she will become the successor of Jamaican female sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown, the winner of the previous edition.

In the male classification the situation is similar, since Jamaican male sprinter Usain Bolt is about some hours to win to repeat his 2008 victory, this time with a great amplitude.

The four aforementioned press media gave their votes to Bolt (43 votes) and Argentinean soccer star Lionel Messi (17 votes after being favoured with the main vote of the National Information Agency of Bolivia (ABI).

Venezuelan baseball player Felix Hernandez (6 votes) is in the third position.

The Brazilian national soccer team is going on its way to win the poll classification over the Brazilian volleyball male team.

The Brazilian soccer team has 28 votes while the team coached by Bernardo Rezende has 21, and Argentinean soccer team
