French, Spanish and Cuban artists of the Schools against Hurricanes project toured around eighteen communities and towns in the western province of Pinar del Rio that were devastated by the hurricanes last year.

The artists also played their music for the local audience in the evening, during a performance at the Federico Engel School.

School Principal Miguel Ángel Pérez Alfonso told the media that that the school has students coming from the areas most hard hit by the hurricanes in 2008: 144 from San Cristóbal, 70 from Los Palacios, 66 from Bahía Honda, and 52 from Viñales.

During those weather events, he explained, the school served as temporary shelter , hosting 2,400 people from the coastal town of La Coloma, who were given accommodations and medical care in the facillity.

Juan Ramón de La Portilla, an official with the local artists association UNEAC, said the group of artists were accompanied by Cuban singer Raul Paz and visited the town of San Diego, in Los Palacios municipality and the community cultural project La Cucaña. They also visited painter Pedro Pablo Oliva’s studio, in the capital city of Pinar del Rio.

The concert "Schools against Hurricanes" is a lovely project to fight hurricanes in the most punished area of Cuba: The Isle of YOuth and PInar del Río.It is about a restoring program to face and overcome devastation after the storm.
