Seasonal Flu Vaccine for the Cubans

Cuban health authorities keep taking measures to protect the population. Some 900, 000 doses against seasonal flu will be administered, as of November 9, to protect the most vulnerable sectors of the Cuban population that could suffer from complications. The vaccine meets the requirements of the World Health Organization.

According to a press release by Cuban health authorities the most vulnerable population groups includes people over 75 years, diabetic women or men of any age and others suffering from severe asthma and chronic kidney disease. The vaccine will also be administered to senior citizens in homes for the elderly, physically impaired persons and workers in the sectors of poultry and pig raising.

The vaccine does not offer protection against Influenza A H1N1, said Epidemiology director Manuel Santin Peña, who explained that the administration of the vaccine will kick off as soon as the first lots of the medication, previously announced by WHO director Margaret Chan.

According to epidemiological criteria, some six influenza viruses are circulating in Cuba, including Influenza A H1N1, while the vaccine announced offers protection against four of those viruses.

Cuban health authorities have made a program to face of the second wave of the pandemic disease, where pregnant women and the eldest are a prior care for the Cuban health authorities.
