Cuban Vice Minister of Culture Bernal presented him with the Title and affirmed that Formell has contributed a great deal to Cuban music and truly deserves the homage.

Famous Cuban piano player Jesus Chucho Valdes extolled the excellent model Formell represents for current and future Cuban musicians.

He also said the second half of the 20th century in Cuba and the beginnings of the current one have had a strong presence of Los Van Van, 40 years making Cubans dance, especially thanks to his work as director and musician of this famous group since it was first founded.

Formell thanked the homage paid to him on behalf of the rest of the group. The ceremony of honor included the performance of a youth quartet who interpreted songs such as "El Manisero", by Moises Simons and "Ya ves", by Pablo Milanes, as well as the piano playing by Chucho Valdes.
