Around 100,000 people in Cuba suffer from Alzheimer''s disease

Around 100,000 people in Cuba suffer from Alzheimer''s disease, but the number could double by 2020 if no cure is found for the disease, a medical source.

Doctor Juan de Jesus Llibre, chairman of the Cuban Alzheimer Program told Juventud Rebelde newspaper that 90 percent of the cases develop in people over 60.

Most of the people suffering from the Alzheimer's disease live in developing countries, so America Latina will soon lead the world.

Faced with an increasing aging population -half a million Cuban will be over 80 year old in 15 years-, the island nation is implementing prevention measures for elder people.

If people adopt healthy living standards, dementia cases could be reduced to half in a five to 10 year period, Llibre noted.

He said risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and drinking habits should be controlled since a person reach middle age,
