Cuba, Camagüey City: important tourist destination
“Surprising” was the term used by Minister of Tourism, Manuel Marrero Cruz, to qualify the feeling left on him by patrimonial edifications, local Culture and History, as well as regional cuisine from this almost 500 years old city displayed before visitors during their familiarization tour as part of the International Fair of Tourism 2009.

Marrero Cruz added that “Cuba is more than sun and beach, it is also Culture, People, Natural landscapes, excellent health care; that is why this Fair was devoted to promote patrimonial aspects that can be appreciated during journeys through Cuban cities so that foreign tourists could be able to really get acquainted with the nation and enjoy all its goodness”.

“We have found an entirely recovered Camagüey City: all that patrimony locked behind the doors has been already showed and the main squares and edifications have been fully restored, it is a city that has come back to life, not only for tourism but for its own people, for tourists and for everyone else”.

Cuban Minister of Tourism highlighted that “cultural demonstrations, very rich indeed, are right there on the street, they can be seen and touched, and that is a big attraction for tourists, not only for national circuits but also for those who stay longer in Camagüey City”.

“We should continue working, mainly to build a greater interaction between Santa Lucía Beach and Camagüey City in order to assure that every tourist who travels to the beach also comes to Camagüey as part of excursions to promote the values of this City”.

The program of the group, headed by Marrero Cruz, included a tour through the Gran Hotel; the 4th Barro y Fuego (Clay and Fire) Festival, held at central Plaza de los Trabajadores as well as the City Historian Headquarters and Martha Jimenez’s Workshop, both located at Plaza del Carmen.

During the interchange, José Rodríguez Barreras presented to the tour operators and Ministry of Tourism officials the elements that defined the declaration of Camagüey City as World Cultural Heritage Site, referring to it as “a city dressed in clay”.

The final stop of the city journey was La Campana de Toledo Restaurant; one of the best facilities of its kind in town, located at emblematic San Juan de Dios Square, where the group enjoyed the performance of Ballet Folklórico de Camagüey.
