In Cuba: With around 26 million poles collected, Pinar del Río concludes the tobacco leaf harvest

The official highlighted the dedication and effort of the tobacco workers to fulfil the present campaign, especially after the damages caused by the hurricanes throughout the province and by the draughts that hit the
northern part of the territory, that brought out that 1 340.8 caballerias were harvested out of the 1 410 planted.
Likewise, Cruz Villate stressed that in these moments they are sorting and classifying light, shade-grown and burley tobacco, while the rest of the variants are to enter this phase in the coming days.
To carry out this activity, recovery actions are reinforced in stripping and sorting houses damaged by Gustav and Ike.
To the abovementioned is added the building efforts in curing barns, 6 669 of which are ready and 750 awaits the materials for walls and ceilings.
In that regard, the official praised the will of the direction of the country to assign resources in order to guarantee the tobacco production in Vueltabajo, and the solidarity of about 3 000 roofers coming from almost all
the provinces of the island that brought tobacco plantations back to life.
Enrique Cruz noted that they are already working on the contracts for 2009-2010 campaign.
