As soon as this breeding system was started in 2007, this province became the country’s most productive, having delivered 385 tons of fish last year and 268 up to now, despite the consequences of last year’s hurricanes.
According to Ismael Oliva Cabrera, director of the fishing business in Sancti Spiritus, tilapia fish production will be raised to 400 tons this year after the introduction of four huge cages in Zaza dam, Cuba’s largest water reservoir.
The breeding of young tilapia fishes is closely supervised so that they reach the 300 grams of weight in a 270-day period of time.
