North American president Barack Obama announced last week the elimination of restrictions on family visits and sending remittances to Cuba by Cuban-Americans who reside in the United States.

Over 800 thousand more tourists arrived in Cuba in 2009 than in 2008, for a record of visitors of over 2 percent, according to an announcement from official sources.

North American president Barack Obama announced last week the elimination of restrictions on family visits and sending remittances to Cuba by Cuban-Americans who reside in the United States.

This measure, according to unofficial calculations, should produce an increase of trips by Cubans resident in the United States who are today found limited by restrictions which permit only one trip every three years and to close relatives.

Over one and a half million Cubans reside in the United States, mainly in Florida and located chiefly in Miami city.

However, an increase of travelers to Cuba is occurring in the first three-month period of 2009 as part of a tendency shown since the previous year, when over 2.3 million visitors arrived for a growth rate above 11 percent.

A group of senators and representatives have presented bills in the North American Congress to completely eliminate prohibitions on North Americans travelling freely to Cuba. This measure can produce a true avalanche of several million North American tourists in one year, according to unofficial calculations.

Up to the present, the main market sending vacationers to Cuba is Canada, followed by Spain, Italy and other European countries.
