Cuban farmers are increasing the number of proven quality seed banks in order to boost food production and reduce imports.
This program has grown in acceptance by government producers and private farmers in central Ciego de Avila province, the third Cuban province in terms of agro product output.

A good example of this is La Cuba assorted crops enterprise, chosen by the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) to test in situ the performance of vegetable clones, which will be useful to multiply production in the central region.

The scientific project was conceived by the Tropical Vegetables National Institute, and among their first results are excellent types of sweet potatoes, yucca, squash, malanga and bananas, explained Carlos Blanco, director of the Ciego de Avila entity.

To create the nurseries they took into account a new and effective approach based on soil conditions, average temperatures and climate, and the opinions of experienced farmers.

This program is part of the MINAGRI strategy to bridge the gap between scientific research and the people in charge of implementing the results in order to increase efficiency in the agriculture sector in every Cuban municipality.

Cuba invested over 40 million dollars to purchase seeds and other expendables to guarantee the current potato harvest, which is in its last stage from Ciego de Avila, in the center of the main island to westernmost Pinar del Rio province.
