Cuba advances in therapeutic use of stem cells
Extended to several provinces, regenerative medicine benefits people suffering from arterial insufficiency, stated Doctor Mayda Quiñones, president of the Cuban Society of Angiology.
She noted that adult stem cells extracted from the patient’s blood through a decantation method, favour hundreds of diabetic people with vascular conditions.

The new medical procedure permits to implant or inject the repairing cells in the area of the body that has been damaged by the disorder.
In some cases the treatment is combined with the use of Heberprot-P,
a growth factor product obtained in the Island through biotechnology procedures, the specialist added.

Quiñones stated that the reduction of amputations related to those conditions, is one of the major achievements of the advanced techniques, now applied in Havana, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos and Pinar del Río.

“The advances of Cuban scientists match the international requirements”, assured the specialist after recalling the high morbidity levels in Cuba caused by vascular illnesses and their after-effects.
As part of the risk factors, she mentioned smoking, lack of exercise, obesity, standing for long periods and the excessive use of oral contraceptives.
This research studies on the benefits of regenerative medicine for the circulatory system, began in Cuba some years ago, and one of the priorities nowadays is its extension to the rest of the island, she affirmed.

Vueltabajo, as this part of the country is also known, was one of the first to use this therapy, aimed at restoring functions by using virgin or repairing cells.
