Writers from Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and Venezuela were welcomed at the Government Palace, located in the provincial capital --some 250 km Southeast of Havana.
The visitors were particularly interested in the history of the Tomás Terry theatre, which will celebrate its 119th anniversary on February 12.
During their one week-long stay, those in charge of choosing the winners of Casa’s Literary Prize ‘2009 are meeting with writers and with Cuban and foreign university students in Cienfuegos --considered among the most attractive places on Cuba’s southern coast.
From Cienfuegos, they will visit the city of Trinidad in the central province of Sancti Spíritus –considered among the top three tourist destinations in Cuba.
The Casa de las Américas Literary Prize was created in the early 60s, in Havana, with an aim to support and promote Latin American Literature. It has satisfactorily accomplished such a goal ever since.
This time, the jury will grant prizes in five different categories: novel, testimony, literature for children and young people, Brazilian literature, and the Latinos in the USA Extraordinary Prize, which will inaugurate a program of studies by Casa de las Americas on this issue, with books written in English or Spanish by Latino researchers living in the United States.
