Angola to Use Cuban Literacy Method
According to Prensa Latina news agency, Burity da Silva said that the Cuban "Yo sí puedo" (Yes, I Can) method, whose efficacy has been amply demonstrated, will play a vital role in Angola's aspirations to teach more than a million people to read and write in 2009.

"Today is a historic day for Angolans as we are commemorating another anniversary of the beginning of our struggle against Portuguese colonialism. This encourages us to continue our fight against ignorance and to train the men and women that our nation's reconstruction requires," he stressed.

The Angolan Minister said his country was happy to have the assistance of Cuba in this new effort.

Buruty da Silva thus inaugurated the first phase of the literacy program, which in the beginning will be experimentally tried in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Huambo and Bie.

Angel Lorenzo Abascal, a Cuban specialist that will be assisting the Angolan education authorities in the initial stage, said that they intend to teach nearly 260,000 people to read and write during this first phase.
