The Cuban jazz scene received a significant boost ever since pianist Ernan Lopez Nussa founded his group Habana Report in 1999. With jazz as its main ingredient, the project mixes in rumba, cha-cha-cha and old standards from the danzon era to serve up genuine Cuban fare.

The late great Tata Güines, one of the legends of Cuban percussion, was one of the founders of Habana Report along with Jose Luis Quintana (Changuito), Pancho Terry, Jorge Reyes, Tomas "Panga" Ramos and Mayquel Gonzalez who joined Ernan Lopez Nussa at a recent concert at the Amadeo Roldan Theater.
As guests were singer Omara Portuondo and Yosvani Terry on sax who joined in on themes such as La sitiera and Tabú.
With a rigorous academic background and extensive professional experience, Ernan has reached the upper echelons of contemporary Cuban music with some critics daring to call his project a jazz version of the Buenavista Social Club.
One thing for sure is that Habana Report captures the palette of genres, rhythms and sounds that make up the Cuban universe of music delivering a synthesis that is genuinely their own.
