High Ranking Spanish Socialist to Visit Cuba
Blanco will arrive Wednesday in Havana, where he will attend a meeting to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the Association of Spanish Businesspeople in Cuba, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

A communiqué released by PSOE in Madrid explained that Blanco’s trip “is to support Spanish business people and the development of future activities.”

In September, Havana hosted the 16th session of the Bilateral Cuba-Spain Business Cooperation Committee.

Spain is the main business partner with the Caribbean country among the 27 members of the European Union.

Two weeks ago, the two governments signed a declaration that formalized Spanish assistance to be provide to Cuba to address a portion of the $5 billion in damage caused by two recent hurricanes.

That agreement, signed by Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation Soraya Rodriguez, commits the European country to €24.5 million in recovery assistance to Cuba.

Most of these funds will be allocated in 2009 and 2010 in parallel to a joint program currently in progress. The assistance will be directed toward a number of spheres, including education, water resources and housing.

Relations between Spain and Cuba recently experienced a significant boost with a visit to Madrid by Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque, who met with Blanco as well as with Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.
