According to Carlos Manuel Pazos Torrado, director of the hydro-energy department at the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industry (MINBAS), the power station generates 48 megawatts every 24 hours, which will help saving 15 tons of fuel in the country.
“The purpose is to use the renewable energy as much as possible”, said Zhao Roulin, president of the Chinese Electric Appliances Corporation, when the plant was first started. The Chinese official also referred to other bilateral projects intended to open some 21 small power stations in a five-year term.
180 hydroelectric power plants have been already built so far in the island.
