The Cuban province of Holguin “shows health indicators similar to those of developed countries, as is the case of the infant mortality rate achieved in the province; it is 3.0 for every 1,000 live births,” said Dr. Joaquin Garcia Salabarría, deputy minister of Public Health. He highlighted the attitude of the healthcare staff working to restore basic services, both in primary and secondary care, following the damage caused by Hurricane Ike.

Blood donations are also being restored to levels corresponding to the number of surgeries and other treatments.

In Holguin, more than 160 healthcare facilities were damaged by hurricane Ike, which will be gradually recover thanks to the participation of maintenance brigades in this sector.
