Events Organized in Cuba and around the World to Commemorate Ten Years Imprisonment of Cuban Five in US Prisons
In 2006, Ricardo Alarcon, President of the Cuban National Assembly, declared the period of time September 12-October 8 as a time to raise awareness of the plight of Cuban heroes Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino known internationally as the Cuban 5.

This September 12th marks the ten year anniversary of that notorious event when the Cuban Five were arbitrarily arrested in Miami, Florida. After being held incommunicado in solitary isolation for seventeen months, the Five were subjected to a trial that made a mockery of the US judicial system and were sentenced to nearly two hundred years in prison between them.

These groups have responded to Alarcon’s call and have organized various events big and small, public and private, free and paying all around the globe.

The Cuban government has announced that the case will go to the US Supreme Court in the pursuit of justice for the Five and have also organized vigils and protests outside the US Interests section in Havana to remind the US government that the Cuban Five will not be forgotten and protests will continue until they are released and return to Cuba.
