Continuum: Slovakian Art in Cuba

The work of Slovakian artists caught the attention of Havana residents until the early 1990s, thanks to the intense work developed by the former Casa de la Cultura Checa cultural center, which was located on one of Havana’s busiest streets.

The exhibit comprises Works by three members of the same family: Vincent Hložník, his daughter Zuzana Holožníkovă and his son-in-law Ľubo Zelina.

The exhibit, inaugurated at the Los Oficios Gallery in Old Havana, reflects the artists’ vision on traditions and their value and the relation between people’s lives and work.

According to experts, anyone interested in re-writing the encyclopedia of European art would have to add these three names, belonging to the second half of the 20th century.

According to Cuban painter Nelson Domínguez, the exhibit offers a new opportunity to learn about the work of Slovakian artists -- a nation with solid traditions and art schools, particularly graphic arts such as wood carving.

Continuum includes some of Vincent Hložník’s last works, dealing with human drama, faith and hopes.

His work, which includes canvas and oil paintings, attracts the public, captivating them.

Ľubo Zelina, for his part, defined the Havana exhibit as a ‘program of indispensable non-classic humanism’, longing to reveal not just the essence of the human existence, but of the very living matter.

The colored paintings of Vincent Hložník and Ľubo Zelina contrast greatly with Zuzana Hložníková´s expressive black-and-white graphic works.

Continuum is a traveling exhibit, which was first displayed between March and June, 2006 in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. It was also exhibited in Rome, Florence, Paris, Strasbourg, The Hague, Madrid and now here in Havana. The exhibit will continue its international tour throughout the Americas, captivating its visitors in cities like Toronto, Buenos Aires, Brazilia and Mexico City.
