Russian President Dmitri Medvedev on Monday entrusted the Ministry of Emergency Situations of his country with offering Cuba assistance to recover from the devastation caused by hurricane Gustav, which hit the Caribbean nation over the weekend.

According to a press report by RIA Novosti news agency quoted by Granma news daily, Gustav destroyed more than 86 thousand houses in the province of Pinar del Rio and in the Isle of Youth special municipality.
The report adds that the hurricane left economic losses to the tune of hundreds of dollars.
The most important damages were in the electricity and telephone networks as well as in some agricultural fields.
