During the homage organized by the Cinemateca de Cuba (Cuban Film Library], directed by filmmaker Manuel Herrera, to Tomás Gutiérrez Alea on occasion of the 40th anniversary of the premiere of his memorable film Memorias del subdesarrollo, took place the pre-launching of the multimedia called Titón, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, produced by Ediciones Cubarte and content by Mercedes Santos Moray, at the Sala Charlot.

This is the first multimedia produced in Cuba about the greatest filmmaker of the Island, which includes a comprehensive look throughout his life and work from his biography, his films, ―including humor short movies he made in his youth―, his studies in Rome, his participation in the la Cultural Society Nuestro Tiempo and, particularly the development of his work after the triumph of the Revolution with the creation of the Instituto Cubano del Arte y la Industria Cinematográficos (Cuban Institute for Film Art and Industry).

The multimedia also includes a extensive gallery of 122 photographs, covering his film work and his private life, and testimonial videos of his work as a filmmaker with unpublished declarations, as the one provided by actor Jorge Perugorría for this multimedia, as well as those from maestro Leo Brouwer, the musician with the greatest participation in Titón’s films, as well as producer Juan Carlos Tabío’s and actress Mirta Ibarra, who not only accompanied Titón in the film, but also in life. There are also sequences from his films.

Interviews gave by the producer in Cuba and other countries, assessments and critics of his films, surveys backing Gutiérrez Alea’s significance not only for the national cinema but also in Latin-American community and particularly Titón’s own opinion about his work, cinema, culture, life and death enrich this useful and interesting multimedia not only for movie-goers but also for students, researchers and public in general caught by the magic of 24 images in motion.

The pre-launching was attended by many personalities, like the winner of the National Cinema Prize, maestro Julio García Espinosa, and writer Ambrosio Fornet, winner of the National Edition Prize and an expert in Gutiérrez Alea’s work, as well as specialists from the Cinemateca de Cuba, from cinema, young university students and public who pay homage to the creator of films like Fresa y Chocolate.

Also, in the Servando Cabrera Moreno art gallery of ICAIC, took place a lecture on the importance and significance, after four decades, of Memorias del subdesarrollo, in which participated the critics Víctor Fowler, María Caridad Cumaná and Mercedes Santos Moray.

In the foyer of the Sala Charles Chaplin was opened an exhibition with photographs and sequences of the film, by Tom Mix, which was presented by Ambrosio Fornet. And, during the whole day were screened films by Titón in that institution, bringing the homage to an end with his emblematic Memorias del subdesarrollo, which had been evoked in the morning by technicians and actors who took part in its shooting.
