Cuban boxers Andry Laffita (51 kg) and Emilio Correa (75 kg) beat their rivals on Friday morning and advanced to the finales of their respective divisions in the Olympic boxing tournament.

In a very difficult match, Laffita secured the silver medal with a hard-fought 9-8 victory over Russian Georgy Balashkin in the first bout of semifinals.
In the meantime, Correa imitated him with an 8-5 win over Indian Vijender Kumar.
In the first day of finals on Saturday, Laffita will face 2007 world silver medalist Somjit Jongjohor of Thailand while Correa will clash against British James Degale.
Meanwhile, also in semifinals, Rosniel Iglesias (64 kg) and Osmay Acosta (91 kg) were eliminated in their respective bouts.
Iglesias was defeated by defending Olympic champion Manus Boonjumnong of Thailand while Acosta was ousted by last year’s world silver medalist Rahim Chakhiev of Russia.
Cuba classified eight boxers for the semifinal round. The other four – Yampier Hernandez (48 kg), Yankiel Leon (54 kg), Yordenis Ugas (60 kg) and Carlos Banteaux (69 kg) – will fight in the second semifinal series on Friday evening.
