In memory of the forty years of its premiere and the eighty years of the birth of its director, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, the Cuban Movie Library has prepared a commemoration event for such important things.
The first thing will be a panel, with the presence of important personalities, on the theme: Importancia y Vigencia de Memorias del Subdesarrollo (imagen) para el cine cubano y latinoamericano (Importance and Currency of Memories of Underdevelopment (picture) for Cuban and Latin American cinema). The panel will take place on August 19 at 10:00 a.m. in the ICAIC Cultural Center .
Also on that same day and in that same Center, there will take place at 3:00 p.m. an encounter with some of the participants in the movie and a pre-launching of a multimedia by Cubarte done by the critic Mercedes Santos Moray on the personality of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, who died in 1996.
On that same day, at five in the afternoon the exhibition Memorias de 40 años (Forty years old memories) will be inaugurated in the Charles Chaplin room. There will also be distributed the brochure A cuarenta años de Memorias del Subdesarrollo (Forty years after Memories of Underdevelopment) that contains fragments of some of the many critics and reports that have been written on this movie over the years. The entrance of the public to these events is free.
For the many admirers and scholars of the work of Gutiérrez Alea, the Charles Chaplin room will offer on the 19 a special program were Los sobrevivientes will be screened at 2:00 p.m., La muerte de un burócrata at 5:00 p.m. and Memorias del Subdesarrollo at 8:30 p.m.
