For the first time in nearly 50 years, Fidel Castro celebrated his birthday Wednesday as an ordinary citizen.
The former Cuban expresident turned 82 on Aug. 13. Experts said they do not expect a public appearance from him.
Wednesday will be Castro's first birthday since his brother, Raul Castro, took over permanently as president in February.
Fidel Castro has not been seen in public since his stomach operation in July 2006, causing speculation over whether he is still alive.
He has appeared in several videos and has written hundreds of articles in the past year.
