Cultural Exchange between Las Tunas, Cuba and Mexican region

With the presence of a Mexican delegation from the Sierra Gorda region began in this city the concretion of a cultural project between that territory and the province of Las Tunas.

With the presence of 38 Mexicans in that locality of the Eastern region, 700 kilometers away from Havana, were opened photographic exhibitions in the Museum Mayor General Vicente García, in the Tomasa Varona culture house and in the Casa Iberoamericana de la Décima.

Henry Miller, Víctor Ildefonso and Elena Baca Sauquet are the author of the exhibits, which reflect the attractive, wild nature in Sierra Gorda, as well as the traditions and values of its inhabitants.

Miller, who was not present during the opening of the exhibitions, sent a text which reads, “We live far from the cities and we do not have good schools or hospitals, and we have to give up our language, our families and our land in order to get a good job”.

During this first day, besides the photographs, the trio Agua Zarca, ―from the municipality of Landa de Matamoros, 206 away from Mexico City―, played several songs related to the traditional son huapango.

The décima has strung together these relations, because the espinela is in the blood of the inhabitants of that Mexican region, and Las Tunas with its Jornadas Cucalambeanas, is the permanent capital of the bucolic poetry in Cuba.

The exchange went on with the realization of workshops on the highland huapango, folk dances and Huastecan huapango dances (image); a visit through the municipality of Puerto Padre and encounter with décima poet-singers.
