In Lebanon Big Success: Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes and his band of young musicians

Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes and his band of young musicians, accompanied by singer Mayra Caridad Valdes, were a big hit at the Byblos International Festival, held outside the Lebanese capital.

Chucho’s Afro-Cuban jazz quintet played on an open-air stage at the old port of Byblos, 42 Kms from Beirut. The other memebers of the band were player Lazaro River, percussionist Yaroldy Abreu, and drummer Juan Carlos Rojas.

The audience was moved by the interpretation of singer Mayra Caridad Valdes, who surprised many with her scat treatment of Cuban genres.

The concert featured French pianist-composer Michel Legrand. The two great pianists delighted the audience with the interpretation of classics like Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. They artfully played off each other in different tempos, tones and rhythms spanning from polkas, and tango to the Cuban son.
