Cuba has made hydraulic investments of over $300 million in the last few years, placing it among nations that have fulfilled the Millennium Goals for water.

National Hydraulic Resources Institute vice president William Leyva Armesto said in this capital that the program is aimed at facing drought, improving service and decreasing losses in the distribution of the essential liquid, Juventud Rebelde newspaper reports.

About 75 percent of the population has access to water through connection to networks, and a 38 percent has sewer service.

The official talked of rehabilitation labors in aqueducts and networks taking place in several provinces, the construction of more aqueducts in communities, and the repair of pipes in the main provincial cities.

In the Millennium Summit held at the UN in 2000, the 189 member countries promised to fulfill eight general development aims, known as the Millennium Development Goal.

To guarantee coverage and clean water in benefit of people are part of those purposes.
