During the meeting, both officials reviewed the state
of current cooperation links between Cuba and his country. They
particularly focused on the implementation in Guinea Bissau of the
Cuban teaching method Yo Sí Puedo (Yes I Can). The literacy program has
allowed more than 1 200 students from different regions of that African
nation to learn how to read and write. Illiteracy is expected to be
eradicated in Guinea Bissau within three-years.
Gomes and Doña Santana addressed the possibility of having Cuban professors specializing in sciences teach in the Amilcar Cabral University of the African nation.
The Cuban ambassador reiterated the invitation to the Guinean minister to participate in the International Ibero-American Meeting on Literacy to be held next June in Havana.
For his part, Alfredo Gomes said that his government will continue to look for ways to enhance relations with Cuba. He noted that the Caribbean country has always supported the Guinean people, while it has been an example of solidarity and friendship for Africa and the world.
