Cuba will take 10 boxers to the Beijing Olympics in August

Cuba will take 10 boxers to the Beijing Olympics in August, one short of the 11 weight categories to be contested. The final berth was given on Wednesday to Yampier Hernandez after defeating his Colombian opponent Oscar Negrete in the final Olympic qualifying tournament in Guatemala.

Russia will be the only team to have a boxer in all 11 categories in the 2008 Olympics followed by Cuba, China, Kazakhstan and Morocco with 10, and the US and Australia just behind with 9, reported Granma newspaper.

With the 23 final tickets to Beijing awarded at the Guatemalan event the total 284 fighters are selected for the Olympics. The figure will increase by two when the International Boxing Federation invites two more boxers.

The only division in which Cuba won’t be represented is at 81 kg, after Julio Cesar La Cruz was unable to win a ticket to Beijing in the two Olympic qualifying tournaments in which he participated, despite having earned a shot by being a convincing winner in Cuban events.

Cuba topped the medal chart in boxing at the Athens 2004 Olympics with five gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
