Eastern Province of Holguin Achieves Lowest Infant Mortality Rate in Cuba
According to Dr. Aladino Teruel Vallejo, representative of the Provincial Center of the Mother and Child Care Program (PAMI), at a similar stage of the preceding year the territory only had 4.55 percent, reporting 16 deaths in children under one year old. Currently there have been seven deaths out of 3,610 live births delivered.

Another indicator that denotes health and the concern of the State to achieve the well-being and quality of life in the family is maintaining the maternal death rate at zero.

These achievements were made possible by the reorganization of the medical forces in Primary Health Care, the intensification of special consultations for premature prophylaxis, the proper use of Maternity Homes as well as the introduction of modern technology services in neonatal and pediatric therapy; but mainly due to the efforts made by the medical staff and the various agencies that support the program.

In Holguin, for more than five years there has been a progressive decrease in the number of deaths of children under 12 months, which shows the effort made by Cuban doctors in saving lives, despite the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States .
