More than 100 movies from four continents at the VI International Poor Cinema Festival in Gibara, Cuba
Presided by the famous Cuban film maker Humberto Solás (Lucía, Un hombre de éxito) the movie event searches for alternatives for diffusion and distribution of low budget, invisible, against the flow or marginal movies, as they are also known.

In a press conference, Solás explained that a group of international institutions will hand in money prizes to important pieces and scholarships to their main creators.

A jury integrated by Iván Sanjines, general coordinator of Consejo Latinoamericano de Cine y Comunicación de los Pueblos Indígenas (Latin American Cinema and Communication of the Indigenous People Council), Paco Jiménez from Spain and Gustavo Arcos from Cuba, will decide the awards in the category of projects not yet produced and unpublished scripts.

In the category of full length and short fiction movies there are 33 films competing under the supervision of Hervé Fischer, main teacher from the Daniel Langlois department of Numerical Technologies and Fine Arts from the Concordia University of Montreal.

He will be accompanied by the Cuban director and script writer Enrique Pineda Barnet, 2006 Cinema National Award and the famous German director Till Hastreiter (Status Yo).

In the genre of documentaries, experimental work and video-art, decision will be in charge of the Argentinean professor Fabián Zampedri, joint department chief of the International Movie and TV School from San Antonio de los Baños; and the directors and scriptwriters Puri Pérez (Spain) and Guillermo Centeno (Cuba).

In this category there are competing 27 materials selected from 241 that were received from Greece, Italy, Palestine, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, Mexico and Cuba.

The opening ceremony of the festival, started with an artistic parade through the main streets from Gibara and on the evening, the Cuban son singer Raúl Paz offered a concert.

The closing ceremony will take place on April 20 with the handing in of the main and special prizes, apart from the awards from Telesur and the one handed in to the best female moviemaker or actress.

The eastern cities of Holguín, Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey are also venues of the event.
