Cuba has made water resources and environment protection its environmental strategy priority
Cuba has made water resources and environment protection its environmental strategy priority in order to preserve the country's economic and social development.

A program is being carried out to plant trees near rivers and lakes, and also at other locations with water resources, covering thousands of hectares across the country.

Cuba has eight marine-coastal zones of national interest in 11 provinces, inhabited by 40 percent of the population and where 50 percent of the nation's economic activity is carried out.

Cuba also has some 240 water reservoirs with a combined capacity of some 9,000 billion cubic meters.

Despite official efforts, pollution still affects many rivers and other water bodies, including Havana's Almendares river.

Water protection campaigns are also being run by the media, teaching people how to save water and become environmentally aware.

The Cuban government also educates its citizens on sustainable agriculture, pollution prevention and improving land quality.

The country's water resource authorities are also repairing or rebuilding old faulty water networks in a bid to fight wastage.

Shortage of water affects at least one in three persons worldwide.
