The most transcendental of Cuban painters returned at last to be exhibited in Marianao quarter, in Havana, where he once lived and conceived an important part of his creations.

The pieces on display included a series of 13 serigraphs from the 1941-1958 period and belong to the Castillo Vazquez collection. The exhibit was hosted by a gallery named after the artist and was part of the activities organised to commemorate his 105-birth anniversary that were extended till February 11th. Among the most important pieces was Retrato de H-H (Portrait of H-H) and Figura de mujer con manzana (Woman figure with apple), both created during his stay at Casa de Panorama 42.

Considered the greatest exponent of the avant-guard movement in Cuba, Wifredo Lam chose the paths of painting as means of expression of his mestee legacy, the blending of Chinese, African, Indian, and Spanish roots. Despite his years of

absence from the Cuban setting and the strong influence of modern Europeans, Lam reaffirms his identity in the braiding of traits in his figures, to thus leave clear evidence of the immense historical and cultural wealth inherent to the peoples in the Caribbean.
