A week of Cultural Activities Began in Venezuela Pays Tribute to Cuba's National Hero
Jose Marti arrived in Caracas on January 21, 1881 as night was falling. Without pausing to shake off the dust, or ask where he could eat or sleep, he asked how he could get to the statue of Simon Bolivar, the South American Liberator. Gathered in the square that houses this statue of Bolivar, several Venezuelan organizations and Cubans working in Venezuela commemorated Marti's arrival to Caracas. Marti would later write about his pilgrimage through the lands of what he called "Our America," "The trip was good for me, because all Americans should love Bolivar"? Marti worked in the Venezuelan capital as a teacher and a journalist. He established friendships with personalities of the political and cultural world. On July 27 of that same year, under pressure from Venezuelan Dictator Antonio Guzman, Marti announced his departure in a letter to Fausto Teodoro de Aldrei, director of La Opinion Nacional. He couldn't be more explicit: "If Venezuela needs me to serve her, she can count on me as her son," he wrote. According to Granma newspaper, Professor Sergio Briceno, director of the Jose Marti Casa de Nuestra America based in Caracas, said that activities will also be held in Puerto Cabello, in the state of Carabobo, where the steamship Felicia landed in transit to the Venezuelan capital, and at La Guaira, the place where Marti landed. Likewise, a group of people will repeat Marti's journey from La Guaira to Caracas along the Camino de los Espanoles. An art exhibition, conferences related to his epic poetry, a presentation of the children's symphony orchestra, and a formal ceremony on January 28 will complete the week program.
