Justice for the Cuban Five Demanded by Mexican Legislator
The president of the lower house of the Mexican legislature, Ruth Zavaleta, said in a meeting on Thursday that the United States must respect the human rights of the Cuban Five and that a statement demanding justice in the case will be presented to the full Senate for approval.

Zavaleta signed this proposed accord presented by the Mexico-Cuba
Parliamentary Friendship Group, which officially began a session with a
ceremony to which Irma Shewerert, mother of Cuban Five member Rene Gonzalez, was invited, reported Granma newspaper.

The meeting was attended by Manuel Aguilera, Cuba's ambassador to
Mexico; Rebeca Mujica, political advisor to the embassy; and Silvia
Lozano, from the Cuban parliament's international relations department.

Zavaleta noted the presence of a large number of legislators from the
different political parties, which she said bodes well both for the
friendship group and the effort to strengthen ties between the two
countries' parliaments and peoples.

Hector Hugo Olivares, president of the Parliamentary Friendship Group
said the action goes beyond protocol, adding that friendship is the
core from which relations between Mexico and Cuba should be developed.

Ambassador Aguilera and Irma Shewerert thanked the Mexican legislators for having organized the committee and for their pronouncements on the Cuban Five case.

They noted that only the pressure of international public opinion will defeat such an injustice and make them free.
