The Cuban eastern province of Las Tunas has produced some 18 million liters of milk in the current 2007, it surpassed in more than one million 634 thousand what it gathered in same stage last year.

The favorable period of rains in this territory has been a decisive factor in the increase of the production of that important liquid. It also favored the growth of the pasture, besides the stable supply of water to the bovine flock.

A wire from the Cuban News Agency in this province, about 670 kilometers to the east of Havana, points out that the sale of milk has also increased, as well as the number of cows in stage of milking and the average of liters per animal, among other indicators.

In Las Tunas 84 percent of the distribution of milk is carried out directly from the producer until the sale places to the population, without necessity of pasteurizing it, what saves important resources like fuels and oils in the transport.

With this strategy, remarkable volumes of powdered milk are saved, whose price surpasses the four thousand dollars the ton in the world market.

In spite of the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, Cuba guarantees in a subsidized way a liter of milk to all the children younger than seven years old. The rest of the infants from that age up to the 13 years old receive nutritious supplements as yogurt or others. The old men and the sick persons are also protected in the Caribbean nation.
