Paulino Rivero, president of the autonomous government of the Canary Islands, advocated for strengthening relations with Cuba on Friday, before meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque in Havana.

In statements to press, President Rivero pointed out that the Canary Islands has never interrupted its relations with Cuba, and there are more than 100 cooperation projects fostered by the Canary Islands with Cuba, and 11 in development.

Rivero said that many of these initiatives are to develop education, social and health programs.

"We want to keep and strengthen our commitment to improve living conditions by the support of the people of the Canary Islands and their Cuban descendents," he said.
